INTRODUCTION
The catalogue of the sixteenth century editions owned by the public library of Empoli contains 765 works in a total of 856 volumes. The present cataloguing records are enriched by the digital images of the title pages, printer's marks, ex-libris inscriptions and hand-written notes that document both the edition's success and the history of the copy. The catalogue is made up of three indexes: the principal and secondary authors, publishers and owners. In order to avoid overloading the web page, which would have created loading problems, the index lists have been divided over different pages according to the initials. If there is more than one work by the same author in the catalogue, the solution adopted was to create an intermediate page, in which the titles of the works are listed alphabetically and linked to the respective catalogue files. In the event that an author has made a variety of contributions (editor, translator, prefacer) a graphic solution has been adopted (italics) which aims to guide the user in his research. In the index of the publishers, the link to the catalogue file is found by clicking on the printing date. In the catalogue there are several works printed by the same publisher and in the same year. Also in this case the solution adopted was to create an intermediate page for the year of printing. At the end of the file the location of the copy in the library is given. Information about the choices made when cataloguing are given for a better understanding of the catalogue files.
PUNCTUATION AND LANGUAGE OF THE TRANSCRIPTION The punctuation has been simplified and only conventional punctuation has been used. Truncations have been made with a full stop and the contractions have been removed. To make the transcription more uniform, U and V have been written according to modern phonetics as established by the criteria suggested by The Regional Scientific Commitee on cataloguing antiquarian books.
HEADINGS The Italian Authors Cataloguing Rules (RICA) have been followed for the choice and form of the headings. These rules have often been difficult to apply to the complex case records presented by the editorial production of the sixteenth century. For the naming of the authors beginning with the letters A - C, the rules used by the 'Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico' (ICCU) (The Central Institute for a single catalogue) have been adopted in the census of the sixteenth century Italian editions. .
BIBLIOGRAPHIC DESCRIPTION The bibliographic records were drawn up according to the ISBD (A) standard (2nd Ed, Munchen, 1991) and the criteria suggested by The Regional Commission of Tuscany for the cataloguing of antiquarian books. The description concerns, as far as possible, the perfect copy. Where copies are damaged, the description is given based on a document recorded in authoritative indexes or catalogues. The index headings and the comment about the integrated information have been given as notes. The described editions were not always found on the index. In this case, the information described has been traced from the owned copy, according to norm 0.12 of the standard.
HEADINGS AND STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY
The final part of the lengthy headings and alternatives has been omitted, as being of little significance, retaining the integrity of the syntax and grammar, as suggested by the standard. Mottoes, invocations and title page dedications have been omitted and referred to in the notes. All such omissions have been indicated with three dots. When a full heading follows the statement of responsibility, it is imperative to record the data as it is on the title page. Sometimes the full title has been favoured and other times the statement of responsibility. It would be too lengthy to illustrate all the choices made which are different in each case. Confronted with complex situations, the solutions may sometimes seem not uniform or constant, but a certain subjectivity in the interpretation of the data must be taken into consideration. For publications without a joint title, including two or more works, the titles of the single works are given in order on the title page. If the publication contains other works in addition to those given on the title page, whether they appear on the title page or not, they are described in the notes.EDITION AREA Due to the difficulty in interpreting the data relative to the edition statement, which is seldom presented in antique books in a clear, autonomous way but very often in relation to other information, it was decided to record, in this case, only the information that presented clear and identifiable wording concerning the edition.
PUBLICATION AREA The data relative to this area is recorded as it appears in the source of information, with the exception of dates written in Arabic numerals. The information presented in the colophon, if it is different from the title page, is found in rounded brackets after the date. Information relative to the printer's mark has not been transcribed, unless this information was not the only information presented in the publication, as established by the Regional Commission. All the omitted data has been indicated with omission points. In the case of missing or incomplete printing notes, if taken from sources external to the publication, these are closed in squared brackets according to the standard.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION AREA In indicating the size of the material, the un-numbered blank pages have also been included, recorded in Arabic numerals in squared brackets. This format is bibliographic and is determined based on the number of folds and the way the paper is folded. The dimensions in centimetres are not given in this catalogue, but can be found in the CDS-ISIS archive. The dimensions of the example are given more completely in the description of the example in the notes.
SERIES AREA Elements regarding series have not been collated.
BIBLIOGRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF MULTI-VOLUMES PUBLICATION For the description of complex documents found in different parts, tomes and volumes that can be presented as separate bibliographic units, a multi-level description was adopted. In the presence of a title page which refers to the publication as a whole, the information contained here refers to the description on the first level, giving the dates relative to the first and the last volume, while the details of each single part are distributed in subsequent lines. Numbering of individual volumes has been integrated in squared brackets with the number of the volume to which the description refers. Due to the difficulty in defining with certainty the editorial number of the parts of a complex work, the index is given autonomy and put in the last place in the order of the volumes.
NOTES ON THE EDITION AREA The first piece of information in this area refers to the recording of the marking of the issues. The initial unnumbered issues are recorded with the symbol π. The presence of the printer's mark is always noted on the title page and/or in the colophon. The Italian marks have been compared with those present in the most important lists of Italian printer's marks and identified when possible. The index in the present catalogue has only been recorded where the description of an incomplete work or the responsibility was uncertain, as suggested by The Regional Scientific Commitee on cataloguing of antiquarian books.
NOTES RELATING TO THE COPY IN HAND Different from the notes on the edition area, the information about the example is particularly detailed in the description of the binding and the manuscript notes and ex-libris inscriptions. Where different works are bound in the same volume, the description of the binding has been given only for the first work contained in the volume. FINGERPRINTS AREA Fingerprints were taken following the instructions contained in 'Fingerprints = Empreints = Impronta. - Paris : Institut de recherche et d'histoire des textes, 1984'
